Foundation has long been known for providing a smooth, flawless aesthetic, but it can be tricky to select the best one when you have textured skin. And if you pick the wrong type or color for your skin, you can end up looking worse for the wear. And if you have acne scars, blemishes, dry or oily skin, it can seem like a real pain to apply it just right.
Your initial thought might be that thicker coverage is the best to hide your less than favorable skin features, but actually, a thinner more lightweight formula is best for textured skin. It’s easier to balance out and won’t make your skin issues more pronounced. But it’s important to know your skin type before you go on a mission of finding the perfect foundation. For oily skin, steer clear of oil-based formulas. For dry skin, you actually want an oil-based formula. If you just really don’t know what your skin type is, you can go to your department store makeup counter and get a consultation (this is often free when you are purchasing something).
Ultimately, the shade can make all the difference. Makeup and foundation, in particular, is supposed to enhance your features and the wrong shade can seem like a neon light pointing out your issues. There are also a variety of formulas that can affect the shade. The most common are sheer, satin, dewy, matte and semi-matte. Some of these wear down faster than others, and by the end of the day it can look cakey or uneven. There are also forms of tinted moisturizers known as BB or CC creams.
Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a great foundation. We’ve reviewed some our favorites and these are the ones that made the list:
